Buying a new PC

by admin on Mar.22, 2010, under Computer

Do you want to buy a new computer?

If you are like anyone else, you must be overwhelmed by the options available or even drowned in the technological gibberish and high costs

For many, purchasing a new pc is not as hard as buying a new home or a new car but it can still get tough if you don’t know much about what to buy or what are your requirements. Most people have a limited budget for buying a new PC and want value for their money. Even if you have a huge budget, i’m sure you would like to buy one that would be worth your money.

Here are three simple ways that can help you save your hard earned money:

1) Look around and shop for best deal.

That sounds simple and straightforward. But many people go looking for the most expensive PC or the one with the most features not even realizing that they would not be using most of extras that make some PC’s expensive. And if you already have an old computer, which is most likely, it may be best to upgrade it. Upgrading a computer for dirt cheap prices will most probably get you a PC comparable to any new one. If you do not have much knowledge about computers, it is best if you look online and browse forums where people with similar budget as yours might have questions on what to buy. These forums are also great for finding out the cheapest prices in your area. A simple google search is all that is needed.

If you are the type that likes going out instead of googling, shop around and ask a lot of questions. Compare features, prices and go to several different places to find the best deal. Then do a quick comparison with the best online deals. You could save 100s of dollars just by doing this simple first step.

2) Install your own software and extras.

Computers found in stores come bundled with “extras” that you may never need. These extras are usually not needed and even if needed, you can always install it on your own instead of shelling out extra dollars for the bundled package. These extras usually sound tempting but it is rare that you will need them. Most people try them once and never use them again. You can find much better deals by shopping around or searching online (antivirus software, word processors, games, spyware remover etc can all easily be found). On top of that, some are freely available and are comparable to paid ones in performance. Before buying a fully bundled PC, check to see whether you really need them, if you are not sure, just leave them out for the moment. You will save tons in the process.

3) Do not buy extended warranties.

If you’re not a computer expert, the extended warranties offered by computer retailers might sound like a great deal. After all, no one wants the hassle of paying for services on a computer after buying it. But most computers (if not all) already come with a warranty, and and any problem will usually occur at the beginning when the normal warranties will still be valid or very much later when your computer might already be outdated and it would be cheaper to upgrade it or buy a new one. Technology moves forward in leaps and bounds. So extended warranties should be bought after considering these. And, if you feel you really need an extended warranty,  ask for a discount. Some retailers might negotiate on the extended warranty but not all will. And whatever you choose always remember to back up all your files and important documents periodically. You never know what might happen one fine day!

If you are among the few with an unlimited budget, just go and buy whatever you want!! You are lucky!

For the others, remember that anything you buy that is not needed is not the best buy.

Hope you find these points helpful. Happy PC shopping!

Making sure that your Windows 7 home network is secured

by admin on Dec.18, 2009, under Networks

Home Network_Full

Not long ago, it was considered a luxury for the average American household to have one computer. Computers were prohibitively expensive back then and only the upper middle class families could afford them. Several years later, the cost of manufacturing a computer would go down. This led to a greater percentage of households having a computer in them. A good portion of these homes can have more than one computer. It can be a pain to transfer files between the computers physically, so most homes have installed local networks in them. With the release of Windows 7, this process has become easier than ever. What was once the domain of the computer geeks is now accessible to the average computer user.

Now that Windows 7 has made it easier than ever to set up your own private home network, there is still the problem of keeping that network secured. Most people realize what a network does in theory, but they do not realize how not having the proper security protocols in order, can lead them to be penetrated by an outside attacker . There are a couple steps that a user can do to prevent this from happening.

The first step that you must do, is to make sure that you have a proper password for logging into your router. There are too many people out there that would like to be able to access your network the easy way, by guessing your password. If you make the password a non dictionary word mixed with numbers, that becomes considerably harder task to accomplish. So make sure that you have thought out a password that will be hard to guess. Some people even leave the default password that comes with the router. That is a big No, No. That password is available to anyone on the Internet and will  leave you extremely vulnerable.

The second thing that you will want to do, is make sure that you pick the right type of encryption for your network. There are several encryption methods available for your network, including WEP, and several forms of WPA, WPA 1 and WPA 2. The best one to pick is WPA 2. It is an improved version of WPA which was already proven to be very effective. WEP, while better than nothing, has proven to be very insecure and should not be chosen unless you really have to.

The last step that you should take to ensure that your network is safe is to choose a good software firewall. Your router should already come with a built in firewall that you can configure but it will double your safety to have a software version as well. This will make sure that just in case someone infiltrates your network security, that they can not get into your computer as well. You can download several highly regarded free firewall software on the Internet. Choose from a reputable company that you have confidence in.

These are a few ways that you can make sure that you keep your Windows 7 network secured. If you follow these steps there should be very little that you will have to worry about.

Heinz Benzawave – USB Microwave

by admin on Nov.29, 2009, under Gadgets

Heinz Snap Pots launches the world's smallest microwave

Eating cold food is never pleasant but that has become the reality that most people have to deal with. Heating up food takes some time, time which is better spent doing something productive or getting to the place you need to be. People who live very hectic lives often live on whatever they can find quick and easy. Eating isn’t always a top priority especially when you are busy at work and finding food is often difficult, let alone finding the time to cook or heat it.

Heinz, in a partnership with Frazer Designers have created a device that lets you cook your food while never leaving your computer. They have created the smallest microwave in the world that is powered through the USB port of your computer. The device measures 7.4 inches tall, 6.2 inches wide, and 5.9 inches deep and gets all the power it needs from your computer or laptop, it therefore has no other connectors available aside from USB cable. Heinz have decided to call the device, oddly enough, as the Benzawave and is custom fit to cook single servings of “Snap Pots”, which are from Heinz. Even if it was meant for Heinz products, you can still cook anything that can fit in the confined space of this microwave. You can heat pizzas, burgers, or even your coffee in it.

People at Heinz and Frazer Designs have said that the device uses radio frequencies to heat the food inside the module. Some detractors have already stated that radio waves are carcinogenic based on some tests with mobile phones. This may be true but since you are cooking food in the microwave and not your brain, this type of allegations might not last very long.

Heinz have not started the production on this device just yet but are basing their decision for the final go ahead on the feedback of people who might like to use this device. Depending on the lifestyle that you live, a device like this might or might not come in handy. Personally, I’ve been searching for a device like this that could heat or reheat my coffee without requiring me to even leave my desk.

TV Addiction – A Growing Concern Among Young Children

by admin on Nov.13, 2009, under Other

TV ADDICTION

You might be reading something like this for the first time but this is a reality that TV addiction is a growing concern among young children these days. TV has become a major recourse of addiction in this modern era. People used to have televisions in their houses for the sake of entertainment but the teenage group and other younger generation is getting influenced through it in a negative manner. TV addiction is as worse as any of the drug addiction. If you are getting over attached to the television and its channels, it can be dangerous and time consuming at the same time. Most of the time, kids that are at home and doing nothing get used to of watching TV and with the course of time they develop the routine of sitting in front of the television for the whole day that can be a concern if not taken proper care of. No one was really aware about the fact that TV addiction is growing rapidly. A recent research has proved that the number of people using drugs and the number of people who are addicted to the television programs is the same; this fact is quite astonishing for a normal person to confront. When kids are watching TV, they are in a world of their own. They probably are too lonely or too bored to watch the programs and cartoons. Most of the time, its just parents who never take care of their children in helping them out with their homework or play with them for a while. They are too busy with their schedules and what they do is that they just provide money to their children for the sake of the entertainment and food for their children but they completely forget about the other mental and emotional requirements of their children. Instead of providing the kids with latest technology, you should more focus on how to make them more active and athletic because it would keep them healthy and fit in the days to come. In order to make sure that your children stay away from TV addiction, you should make sure that you are taking good care of your children and you should also make sure that your are giving them suitable time so that they never feel lonely or neglected. Make sure that they get involved in the outdoor sports and stays from TV or videogames. This way you can assure that your child stays fit and also stay away from different addictions.
